Why Not Just Shoot a Video?
In many cases you should. Video is a flexible medium that can be cost-effective and quick when it needs to be, to capture an event. In the hands of a video professional, it can also be a powerful and compelling medium for instructional/promotional information and story-telling.

3D simulation and virtual environments offer unique advantages that other media can not. VR technologies can incorporate a high degree of interactive hands-on participation in immersive activities that are simply not possible with other media.

Regarding time-based media specifically, it is my view that video and film can't approach the clarity with which 3D simulation is able to control and direct viewer attention to specific detail. 3D can offer the distinct advantage of simplicity in much the same way that line-art illustration is preferred over photographs for use in hardware assembly instructions.
