Another unique attribute of 3D simulation is its ability to depict activity that would be impossible to capture with live-action footage because of scale (microscopic/cosmic) or viewpoint (such as functionality from within an object).

Complex abstract concepts are best interpreted spatially, making 3D a more effective tool for them than the written word or traditional 2D illustration. In addition, 3D animation provides the ability to fly-through or selectively see-through complex components. The instructional value of this is obvious.

Of course there are situations in which the use of 3D would not add value and might therefore be a costly and unnecessary expense. The success of any media product ultimately requires experienced developers, artists, and communications professionals that know how to evaluate a project and determine the most appropriate media for the task at hand.
